Marin Headlands National Seashore

Marin Headlands National Seashore
 Yummy salamanders
Marin Headlands has a few legal trails. There are several trails here that are off limits to bikes. We didn't even bring our bikes on this trip!

Kimberly, don't tear that sign down!

Here is Kim at the end of the bike trail. You may walk or ride horseback to Muir Beach at the bottom of the trail. Good perch fishing from shore! You can catch halibut and Salmon in the cove. A boat works best for that. Muir Woods is just a few miles north. Muir Woods is another National Park that does not allow bike riding on most of the trails. On a clear day you can see Stinson Beach and Point Reyes to the north from this point. Just south of Stinson is Red Rock Beach and just south of Red Rock Beach is Steep Ravine (one mile south of Stinson Beach). Why am I rambling..... Well.... Steep Ravine has very cool primitive cabins that you can rent ($30 a night through the State Parks system) and sandwiched between Steep Ravine and Red Rock Beach is a hot spring right on the beach. The temperature can get up to 115 degrees at the source, but usually stays around 100-105 degrees in the newly made pools on the beach. The pools have to be made by you! The spring sits below sea level and can only be used during minus tides and there are several negative tide days every year. You need to get there early to make your own hot tub on the beach, or get there late and crash the party. So the next time you are riding in Marin check the tide book and try to find the hot springs. It's no secret so expect a crowd. The pools are clothing optional!!!

Stop and smell the flowers.

Wild calililies (thanks Dre), native bunch grass and willows in the foreground. Coyote bushes and bike riders on the trail below. There are several interesting trails in the park and we hope that more of them will be available for bike riding soon.
