Lafayette Reservoir

Lafayette Reservoir
I don't know if it gets worse than East Bay MUD when it comes to outlaw bike trails (Briones Reservoir is on East Bay MUD land also). Lafayette Reservoir is a beautiful little reservoir that has a paved trail all the way around it. A whopping 2.9 miles of gentle climbs and descents. You can ride the winding road legally on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings, or some such nonsense. You can never ride the upper and more challenging dirt fire roads that circle the hilltops above the reservoir. It is O.K. to walk or ride horses on the 8 plus  miles of fire roads around the top. Sweeping views of Mount Diablo, Briones Park and the East Bay hills would make this a very nice ride.
There's good and legal fishing for black bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish and a few big trout. There is a fish from Egypt that looks like a goldfish. It's not welcome in these waters and they want you to keep or kill them. They say the fish is a non native. I didn't know that the bass, trout and other fish were native. Speaking of non natives, someone let some water snakes go in the reservoir. They are big and from the south. Some day I'll know their name. They're not welcome here either. They've been known to steal people's fish right off their fishing line! I don't know if they want you to catch and kill them too. Okay, I'll quit talking about snakes.
The winter of 1999 had a bald eagle hanging out here (it was on T.V. and everything). I guess the bald eagle is welcome here. Too bad your bikes aren't. It now costs $3 to fish (thanks Dave) and $5 to park your car. You can park at the meters for $1 per hour. Sometimes there are one or two meters that are broken. You can park at those meters for free!
More bald eagles have been spotted here over the last couple of years. Bald eagles have also been seen at nearby San Pablo and Briones reservoirs. The mighty and much more powerful golden eagle is becoming a more common site too. Golden eagles are nesting around the Mount Diablo area in very high numbers, more than anywhere else in the state! So get on your bike (only the posted times) and check out Lafayette Reservoir. Make sure that you are not riding and bird watching at the same time!
